MARITIMERS SUCCESSFUL IN MONTREAL Saturday, August 06, 2005

On July 31, on the way home from the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, Maritime competitors participating at the Montreal Highland Games had yet another successful day on the field. In pipe band competitions, Dartmouth & District Pipe Band placed third in the Grade 2 Medley and Dartmouth Junior was first in the Grade 4 Medley. The Gaelic College Pipe Band placed fourth in the Grade 3 Medley. Fredericton Society of St. Andrew Pipe Band drummers won best drum corps and best bass section.

In the Professional solo piping events, Elizabeth Drury (78th Highlanders Halifax Citadel) took at third in Jig, fifth in March, fifth in Strathspey Reel and sixth in Professional Piobaireachd; and band mate Rowan Manson took fifth in Jig, fourth in March, fourth in Strathspey Reel and fifth in Professional Piobaireachd. John MacPhee (Gaelic College Pipe Band) placed first in the Professional Piobaireachd event. In Grade 1 Jig, the College of Piping’s Nick Van Ouwerkerk placed first. In the Grade 2 category, Ryan Fraser (Dartmouth & District Pipe Band) placed first in the Jig, fourth in March, and third in Strathspey Reel; band mate Sarah Campbell placed second in Jig; and Adam Gillis (Antigonish Highland Society) placed fifth in Jig, sixth in Strathspey Reel and second in the Intermediate Amateur Piobaireachd event. Gaelic College Pipe Band’s Amanda Pulling was fourth in the Grade 3 Strathspey Reel. And Thomas Harrington from Old Scotia Pipes & Drums was fourth in Grade 4 March.

In professional drumming March Strathspey Reel event, Fredericton Society of St. Andrew Pipe Band’s Jeremy White placed second and Aaron Carter followed him with a third place finish. Dartmouth & District’s Ben Harrison in the Grade 2 category placed second in Hornpipe Jig and third in March Strathspey Reel. In the Grade 4 March event, College of Piping’s Courtney Fitzgerald placed first, Christopher Rodgers was fifth and Ashley Brockway was sixth.

Another successful excursion into Ontario’s competition circuit.
