Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association
BEGINNINGS OF THE ACPBA: 1979

Membership is at 26 bands but several of them are from Ontario and British Columbia, coming to Nova Scotia for the Antigonish Highland Games. The number of Nova Scotia bands seems to be dropping. The Antigonish Highland Society adds a third day of competitions so that it can host the major championship for the International Gathering of the Clans. Bands from across Canada come including six Grade 1 bands - Canada's best! It is an exciting event as thousands attend the evening tattoo. A grandstand collapses under the weight of the crowds but no one is seriously injured.

President Joan Smith leaves her position at the Gaelic College and departs for Scotland. Al Payzant of Dartmouth is acting President. The Chief Steward resigns and the secretary gives his notice (he stays on for another ten years but gives notice regularly just in case someone else will take on the job).

The year ends with serious financial problems. The workshop and indoor competitions cost more than they took in and the medals left us with a deficit of $2,000.00 for the year. Tom MacIsaac is named President. Band fees increase to $100.00.
