Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association
Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association
BEGINNINGS OF THE ACPBA: 1971

Membership fee set at $1.00 per person or $25.00 per band. Only member bands will be permitted to compete at N.S. competitions. Out-of-province bands allowed to compete for this year only. It was decided that it takes 2 piping and 1 drumming judge to judge band competitions. Fees are set at $75.00 per day, plus meals, travel and accommodations. Pipe Major Bill Magennis urges the membership to adopt a graded system for competitions rather than one based on age and sex. He asks to be allowed to compete with his band in the junior category. This is not permitted as to allow the instructors to play with their bands would give some bands an unfair advantage.

At the Annual General Meeting in May, Magennis explains the graded system to the membership. He urges acceptance. He fears that many talented young players stop when they reach the age of 18 because they have no senior band in their area. There was a great deal of discussion but his proposal was not approved.

- Provincial start-up grant of $5,000.00 received.
